Top Living Room Decor Trends for 2020

The living room is the calling card of our homes. The space where you probably spend more of your time when at home (unless you work from an home office, as I do, so yes you will probably spend more time there..!), but it is also the room that is open to guests, where to spend time together with other people.

More and more often now, “Living room” is also synonymous with open space, with sitting/dining and kitchen, with multifunctional design. Probably, it is also the room which reflects much more the changes of design according to our way of living.

Let’s continue today our virtual journey in the different home environments to see what’s new and on trend now, as seen at the last Salone del Mobile, bygoing through today the new trends for the living room.

We are doing this virtual journey in collaboration with Zanette, an historical brand of Italian furniture for the home. This year, the brand was at its 55th year of participation at Salone del Mobile, which in total counts 58 editions, so you can easily imagine that this is a brand with a long story behind.

Il soggiorno è il biglietto da visita della nostra casa. Lo spazio in cui probabilmente trascorri più tempo quando sei a casa (a meno che anche tu, come me, non lavori da casa, e in questo caso il tuo home office sarà la stanza in cui stai di più! ), ma è anche la stanza della casa che è aperta agli ospiti, dove trascorrere del tempo insieme ad altre persone.

Sempre più spesso, “Living room” è diventato sinonimo di open space e di spazio multifunzionale, in cui convivono salotto / sala da pranzo e cucina. Sicuramente, è anche la stanza della casa che riflette maggiormente i cambiamenti del design in risposta ai cambiamenti del nostro stile di vita.

Continuiamo oggi il nostro viaggio virtuale nei diversi ambienti domestici per vedere cosa c’è di nuovo e di tendenza oggi, come osservato all’ultimo Salone del Mobile, parlando oggi di trend per il living.

3 key Living Room Trends for 2020 to Try Now

1/ New minimalism

We were talking in this post about the maximalism as a huge trend now in the interior and decor. But what about if you are totally not into maximalism and you always prefer, instead, a more clean decoration? I am in this mood as well, however, as you can see in the past restyling of my living room here.

We can talk about a totally new approach to minimalism to try now.

Clean lines, geometries, few pieces of decor, are still key part of the decor. BUT everything become much more tactile and layered. That means, empty white walls become painted walls with limewashed effect, to create a first layer in the decor, to be completed by a print or a mirror. Same applies for the finishes: for example, clean glass become frosted and structured. Textiles and fabrics cerate a further layer of the decoration, which is still minimal but cozier and softer.

Ne parlavamo in questo post, del massimalismo come una tendenza oggi in forte crescita .
nell’arredamento. Ma c’è anche chi continua a preferire un approccio più minimalista – come me, come potrai facilmente intuire vedendo il restyling del mio living qui. 

Possiamo parlare però oggi di un approccio totalmente nuovo allo stile minimalista.

Linee pulite, geometrie, pochi e selezionati oggetti, restano sempre delle linee guida fondamentali per decorare la casa in chiave minimalista, ma tutto oggi nell’insieme diventa più tattile e “stratificato”. Per spiegare nel concreto a coa mi riferisco, ad esempio, le pareti bianche vuote diventano pareti dipinte con effetto a calce, per creare un primo strato di sottofondo visivo e dare più profondità. Lo stesso vale per le finiture degli arredi: ad esempio, il vetro diventa smerigliato e strutturato. Anche i tessuti assumono un’importanza fondamentale nell’insieme dell’arredo, creando un ulteriore “layer”decorativo, per un effetto finale più accogliente e soft.

2/ Dark wood

While wood is having a huge comeback (we have seen this also in many other reports), the essences that are more on trend now are for sure the dark and hard ones. Plus, with a very natural finish, to put in evidence veins, knots and imperfections. This is something that I am predicting from a while and that finally this year I spotted a lot at Salone del Mobile as well.

Talking about furniture, we used for a while to stay from the darker tones. Maybe because, in our minds, dark wood was linked to a more traditional and classical style. But the reality is that now dark wood is strongly back on trend and we will see it more and more often. Especially, if matched with a textured or a dark background as in this styling from Zanette stand at the last Salone del Mobile, adding deepness to the whole space.

Il legno sta rivivendo un grande momento nel mondo del design e dell’arredamento (lo abbiamo già visto anche in molti altri report), e va detto che le essenze oggi più in voga ora sono sicuramente quelle più scure. Senza dubbio, con una finitura naturale, che metta in evidenza venature, nodi ed imperfezioni. Ve lo dicevo già da un po’e si è visto con assoluta evidenza al Salone del Mobile di quest’anno.

Anche se, quando scegliamo un arredo, tendiamo ancora ad optare per toni più chiari e ci dobbiamo ancora abituare alle essenze più scure. Probabilmente perché il legno in essenze scure ci lega nei nostri ricordi di uno stile più tradizionale e classico. Ma la realtà è che non è assolutamente più così e ora il legno scuro è fortemente tornato in voga, e lo vedremo sempre più spesso. Provatelo subito per il living, magari abbinandolo ad uno sfondo scuro o strutturato che crei profondità, come in questo styling dallo stand Zanette all’ultimo Salone del Mobile.

3/ Modularity

As said above, the living room is today the more flexible environment of the house. The one which must adapt to our life changes, hosting many different functions inside the same space. That’s why modular design is such a big thing now in furniture design, even more, when we talk about living room design.

The trend is on the rise and furniture brands will explore more and more new possibilities to make a furniture piece look beautiful, while at the same time allowing customers to change the design easily.

Come detto all’inizio del post, il living è oggi necessariamente l’ambiente più flessibile della casa. Quello che deve maggiormente adattarsi ai cambiamenti del nsotro stile di vita, ospitando molte funzioni diverse all’interno dello stesso spazio. Ecco perché il design modulare è oggi una caratteristica imprescindibile nel mondo dell’arredo, specialmente quando parliamo del design del living.

La tendenza è in forte crescita: le aziende di arredo cercheranno soluzioni sempre più nuove ed efficaci affinchè un arredo sia esteticamente bello e allo stesso tempo con un layout facilmente modificabile a seconda delle diverse esigenze.
